What is an Enoteca?

What is an Enoteca? In formal terms, Enoteca (“Ehn-o-tek-a”) is an Italian word, derived from Greek, which literally means "wine repository” (from Oeno/Eno - "wine" and Teca - "receptacle, case, box"). It is used to describe a special type of local or regional wine shop that originated in Italy. A traditional Enoteca is primarily focused on giving visitors the opportunity to taste wines for a reasonable fee and providing the option to purchase them. Historically, they have often been run in collaboration with growers or tourism organizations in the town or region in which they are located.

The reason such establishments were named to connote “wine libraries” was because they were intended to serve as hands-on sources of information on (local) wines rather than as generic outlets for large quantities of wine. In most cases, an Enoteca also sells other local foodstuff and/or serves small snacks to go with the wines. In less formal terms, an Enoteca is simply a casual wine bar that serves hand-selected wines along with small plates, artisanal cheeses and cured meats in atmosphere of genuine conviviality.
